Back in the days of my youth I was an average skateboarder. 'Rad' I was not. Maybe flailing monkey would be more a more accurate description of style.
However, inbetween sampling the taste of tarmac, I did occasionally experience that beautiful, pure 'in the moment' feeling that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi famously named 'Flow'. I would be carving down the road on my board and realise that my body and mind were totally as one, nothing else existed as I was drawn down into that special place where time falls away.
Fast forward a number of years and my journey seems to have come full circle. Last week I found myself standing in my local Surf and Skate shop and somehow I became the proud owner of a beautiful new Longboard! It's made by Lush Skateboards and I was assured it is designed with the more mature rider in mind.
Now, you may ask whether I am going through some kind of early (ish) mid-life crisis and trying to re-live my youth.
Actually, what I am trying to do though is to incorporate as much joyful movement into every day life as possible and I think that riding my skateboard, however badly is a mighty good way of achieving that. In this way, even the smallest journey becomes an adventure.
Now, time to experience some 'Pure Stoke' and hopefully not the A&E department.
Until the next time..
